Join AAPI LEAD as we celebrate Law Day 2025 and the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a powerful conversation featuring three renowned AANHPI Attorneys General: Rob Bonta (CA), William Tong (CT), and Josh Kaul (WI). Hosted by AAPI LEAD and co-moderated by AAPI LEAD Board President / San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu and NAPABA Executive Director Priya Purandare, this discussion comes at a critical time for the rule of law in the United States and will delve into the personal journeys of each panelist and the critical role that AANHPI lawyers and leaders play in upholding our democracy.
Law Day is held annually on May 1 as a national celebration of the rule of law and provides an opportunity to educate the public on how the law underpins our democracy and contributes to the freedoms and liberties that all Americans share.

Rob Bonta is the Attorney General of California and the first Filipino American to hold the office. Appointed in 2021 and elected later that year, Bonta has focused on advancing racial justice, protecting consumers, and promoting public safety. Prior to becoming Attorney General, he served in the California State Assembly, where he championed progressive policies on criminal justice reform, environmental protection, and immigrant rights.

William Tong is the Attorney General of Connecticut and the first Asian American elected to statewide office in the state. He has led major initiatives on consumer protection, gun violence prevention, and hate crimes enforcement. Previously, he served in the Connecticut House of Representatives and worked as a litigation partner in private practice. Tong is nationally recognized for his leadership in multistate actions on issues ranging from opioids to civil rights.

Josh Kaul has served as Wisconsin’s Attorney General since 2019, focusing on public safety, protecting natural resources, and defending voting rights. A former federal prosecutor in Baltimore, he worked closely with law enforcement to take violent criminals off the streets. After returning to Wisconsin, he fought against voter suppression in court. Raised in Oshkosh and Fond du Lac, Josh is the son of a prosecutor and a police officer. He graduated with honors from Yale and earned his law degree from Stanford, where he led the Law Review. Josh lives in Wisconsin with his wife Lindsey and their two sons.

David Chiu is the first Asian American elected as San Francisco City Attorney. He also serves as Board President of AAPI LEAD. Previously, he was a member of the California State Assembly, where he served as the first Asian American to represent San Francisco and held leadership roles including Assembly Housing Committee Chair. A longtime public servant and advocate, Chiu has championed affordable housing, civil rights, and immigrant protections throughout his career.

Priya Purandare
Priya Purandare is the Executive Director of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), the nation’s largest Asian Pacific American membership organization representing the interests of 80,000 legal professionals.
She is the longest-tenured staff member in the organization’s history and has elevated the organization’s national presence by strengthening its advocacy, expanding professional development initiatives, and deepening member engagement. Under her leadership, NAPABA has advanced critical civil rights, grown its coalition-building efforts, and expanded leadership pathways for AANHPI attorneys across the country.
